A Pair Trade Between Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electro-Mechanics
The core investment thesis of this insight is a pair trade (long Samsung Electronics (005930 KS) and short Samsung Electro Mechanics Co, Ltd. (009150 KS)) (SEMCO).
My argument for the long-short trade is mainly due to two main factors. First, I think the valuations for Samsung Electronics is now more compelling relative to SEMCO.
Second, there are early signs of a potential slowdown in demand for AI infrastructure buildout by hyperscalers. In such a scenario, I think Samsung Electronics could perform better than SEMCO.
Both Samsung Electronics and SEMCO are major beneficiaries of the aggressive expansion of AI data centers globally. For Samsung Electronics in particular, this is related to the semiconductor chips including HBM, DRAM, and NAND products. For SEMCO, this is mainly related to its semiconductor package substrates (FC-BGA) and multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). Both companies are experiencing surging demand for these products.

Samsung Electro Mechanics Co, Ltd. (009150 KS) is one of the major beneficiaries of the strong demand for Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) and semiconductor package substrates (FCBGA).
MLCCs are the company’s biggest revenue driver. They act like tiny, rechargeable batteries that smooth out electrical flow inside electronic devices. They trap and release energy to keep power clean and steady. MLCCs are used in AI data centers, smartphones, and cars.
