South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol Is Impeached by the National Assembly - What's Next?
On 14 December, South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol was impeached by the National Assembly in a vote of 204 out of 300 seats.
The Constitutional Court could take about 90-180 days in making the final decision on the impeachment of President Yoon.
Now that President Yoon has been impeached, Han Duk-Soo (Prime Minister) will become the temporary acting President of South Korea.
On 14 December, South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol was impeached by the National Assembly in a vote of 204 out of 300 seats. In the past three decades, there have been seven Presidents (excluding temporary acting ones including Goh Un and Hwang Kyo-Ahn) in South Korea, of which three of them have now been impeached by the National Assembly (Yoon Suk-Yeol (2022 - current), Park Geun-hye (2013-2017), and Roh Moo-hyun (2003 - 2008).
In other words, 43% of the South Korean Presidents (3/7) have been impeached by the National Assembly in the past 30 years. The National Parliament impeached President Yoon on his attempt to impose martial law earlier this month.
